What a Fence Permit Asks For

Counties don’t all ask for the same drawings. This is what they usually want for a fence; we confirm your county’s list in the quote.

What the County Checks on a Fence Permit

The items reviewers look for first. Every sheet we draw shows them.

  1. 01

    Where the fence runs

Fence line drawn on or inside the lot lines, never across them.

  2. 02

    Height in each yard

Height for every run; front yards usually have a lower limit.

  3. 03

    Corner sight lines

The sight triangle at corners and driveways, where fences must stay low.

  4. 04

    Gates

Gate locations, widths and swing, kept off the sidewalk.

  5. 05

    Easements

Utility easements the fence crosses, when they’re on record.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Many counties require one, especially for fences over 6 feet, in front yards or on corner lots. Some only need HOA approval. Check your county or ask us.

How tall can my fence be?

Commonly 6 feet in back and side yards and 3 to 4 feet in front yards, but it depends on your zoning code.

Can my fence go right on the property line?

Often yes, but some places require it to sit inside the line. If the line’s location is uncertain, a survey is the safe choice.

What about pool fences?

Pool barriers have their own rules for height and self-closing gates. See our pool permit page.
