Do I need a permit for a carport?

Usually, especially if it has a roof attached to the house or is over a certain size. Open, small carports are exempt in some counties.

Which drawings does a garage need?

Usually a site plan, floor plan and elevations, plus foundation and framing details. Many counties want these as one set.

Does a garage need an engineer?

Not always. Large spans, heavy snow or wind areas, and second-floor rooms often bring in an engineer’s stamp.

Can I add a room above the garage?

Yes, but it usually counts as living space or an ADU, which adds more requirements. See our ADU page.
